    Excerpts from the Monroe Doctrine

Colonial Folkways: A Chronicle of Life in the Reign of the Georges
Colonial Folkways: A Chronicle of Life in the Reign of the Georges
    by Charles M. Andrews

This reprint of a 1918 book is an extremely useful introduction to ways of life in the American colonies. As an overview it can not go into great depth on any one subject, yet its frequent mention of original sources will lead researchers to other material. Chapters include The Land and the People, Town and Country, Colonial Houses, Habilments and Habits, Everyday Needs and Diversions, The Intellectual Life, The Cure of Souls, The Problem of Labor, and Colonial Travel. The narrative style is reminiscent of a beloved but somewhat fusty uncle--who was sufficiently diligent as to provide an excellent index and bibliography. Dr. Andrews, who taught at Bryn Mawr, Johns Hopkins, and Yale, went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for another book on colonial history.

This book is held in the Virginiana section.
