Fredericksburg Newspapers (Microfilmed and indexed)
Fredericksburg Newspapers available on microfilm at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library*. Under each heading are all known names the newspapers were published, the years and the publisher. Although these newspapers reflect a substantial period of Fredericksburg history, each of the newspapers listed below have missing issues. (If you have an issue of any of the older Fredericksburg area newspaper contact the library to determine if the issue has been microfilmed.)

The Virginia Herald

The Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg and Advertiser (1787-1795) published semiweekly by Timothy Green Brand Co.
The Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg and Falmouth Advertiser (1795-1797) published semi-weekly by T Green.
The Virginia Herald (1797-187u) published semi-weekly by Timothy Green According to Quinn the newspaper was first conducted by Timothy Green and after some years he took on partners Mr.Lacy and James D. Harrow. The firm was succeeded by William F. Gray and then James D Harrow. When Harrow died in 1851 the paper was purchased by Major J. Harrison Kelly and printed until 1875 when it was discontinued.

The News (187u-1886) published semi-weekly by A. Alexander Little
Quinn states The News was originally published by Robert Baylor Semple for several years. According to Quinn the newspaper was acquired by Alexander Little in 1853 and published until his death in 1877. He adds following the death of Little the paper was continued for a few years by Miss Bella Little. Cappon states the paper was edited by Bella Little (1877-1880?) AJ Little (1880-1885) and James T. Powell (1885-1886)

Quinn States James M. Campbell moved from Fredericksburg in 1850. The Recorder was continued by RB Alexander, then S.Greenhow Daniel and then James B.Sener. Quinn states the Newspaper was renamed The Ledger following the Civil War and ceased publication in 1872.
NOTE: ISSUES OF BOTH DEMOCRATIC RECORDER AND WEEKLY RECORDER WERE IN THE POSSESSION OF CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY IN 1976 WHEN THE ISSUES WERE INDEXED BY ROBERT HODGE. THE ORIGINIALS WERE STOLEN IN ABOUT 1979 BEFORE THE ISSUES COULD BE MICROFILMED. NONE OF THE ISSUES INDEXED BY HODGE ARE AVAILABLE.
